Our motto is simple: spreadsheets run the world. When we set out to build Calculator Studio, we wanted to put a tool into the hands of everyday spreadsheet users that equipped them (and their spreadsheets) with superpowers.

Under the hood of Calculator Studio, you'll find GRID, a powerful spreadsheet engine that runs entirely in the browser. This engine powers both Calculator Studio's built-in spreadsheet editor, but also enables you to upload or connect your Excel and Google Sheets spreadsheets to power your calculators.

Then comes the visualization layer.

After connecting or creating a spreadsheet, the next thing you do in Calculator Studio is use the powerful calculator editor. This is where it all starts to come together. Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wonder what it would look like if Excel and Word were combined into one product”? We did. And we want you to put it to use.

Add your narrative, data visualizations, input and interaction elements and connect them to cells in the underlying spreadsheet. Interacting with the elements in the document, you’ll see the real-time calculation happen in the spreadsheet, and now you’re ready to make magic happen.

Does Calculator Studio support everything a spreadsheet can do?

Calculator Studio operates on the GRID spreadsheet engine, which differs slightly from typical spreadsheet software. While the GRID engine supports the vast majority of spreadsheet functions, a few specialized or rarely used features may not be available. Notably, GRID does not support scripting languages like Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or App Script. However, it’s important to note that the engine fully supports 98% of all spreadsheet functions, and for most of the remaining cases, straightforward workarounds can achieve similar results.

Does my spreadsheet change when my calculator is altered?

This is a great question, and the answer is no. Calculator Studio does not write back into your original spreadsheet when a calculator is interacted with or altered. Just think of your calculator or project as a protective layer between your spreadsheet and your viewers. You decide which parts of the spreadsheet you want to present, how you want it to appear, and who will see it. The spreadsheets you’ve connected to Calculator Studio will never be altered by changes made (by author or viewers) to the project.
